Sunday Business Post Article

Hi Folks,

The piece in the Sunday Business Post states that the Rizzi show runs until March 26th. This is incorrect – the show opens on March 26th and will run for a minimum of 3 weeks so we look forward to seeing you then!

Frank Kiely at Gallery Number One

To coincide with Dublin City’s Swift month (April 2008) we are showing some of Frank Kiely‚Äôs ‚ÄòGullivers Travels‚Äô work.

We are glad to tell you that these prints have not been shown together before. One of the aspects of Franks Gullivers series is that he uses a different model for each picture of Gulliver. He does this to suggest, and, to enhance certain aspects of Gullivers character as he visits the many strange lands in the book. These pictures also have possible other contemporary narratives, for example “Green Grass” could be seen as simply a sunbather in the grounds of Dublin Castle, or perhaps even Shane MacGowan!? But It is also an image of Gulliver at Lilliput. When you think of this figure standing up this becomes clear.

The Castle of Lilliput in Swift’s book was based on Westminister in London. So the ghostly figure in Franks work is also referencing the Irish Diaspora in an inverted way. This idea is emphasized in the title “Green Grass” , the colour green is synonymous with the Irish. The word Grass has many meanings it could make one think of phrases like “The Green Grass of Home” and ” The Grass is Always Greener”.

Many of the images on show have hidden elements in them: animals, dinosaurs and unusual plants. Frank has put dinosaurs into “Brobdingnag” as to suggest the small size of Gulliver while in this land of giants. Come on in and see if you can see them??!

GN1 presents JAMES RIZZI

JAMES RIZZI could be the world’s most famous living artist, although sometimes he is known as ‘that guy who draws the buildings with faces,’ and sometimes he is known as ‘the guy who draws those birds.’ Rizzi has never had a show at the Louvre or the Met, although he has been to both places, but in terms of audience, he’s as big as they come. Over his long career Rizzi has created hundreds of prints, paintings and drawings, and he has put his art on lots of other things, like buildings, airplanes, cars and cows

Rizzi is huge in the United States, huger in Japan and hugest in Germany, but that’s just the beginning. His cult is growing everywhere. There’s even a Rizzi on Seinfeld.

Rizzi is of Italian Irish descent. His mother being Irish and his father Italian (Think USA ’94 Giants Stadium!!)

Gallery Number One is delighted to be representing him in Ireland for the first time. Make sure and check it out!!!!
